Sanoop & Vidya Residence_The courtyard home
Site Area : 15 Cents Project Area: 2800 Sqft
Given the constraints of the site, which is a typical 6 cent urban parcel of land in the densified residential area of Vaduthala, the design focused on maximizing light and ventilation while preserving privacy for the inhabitants. With neighboring houses on three sides and only the front opening out to the road, the front facade was strategically utilized to allow for ample light and ventilation.
On the ground floor, an open plan layout was adopted, encompassing the living area, dining space, and an open kitchen. This arrangement enhances the sense of spaciousness and promotes interaction among family members and guests.
To create well-lit and ventilated private spaces within the house, the upper rooms were planned around a triple-height light well. This central feature serves as a source of natural light that filters down through the different levels, illuminating the surrounding areas. To balance privacy and light, the fenestrations on the upper rooms were kept nominal, small, and functional, allowing for cross ventilation while minimizing direct views into the interior.
The staircase was positioned along the central light well, serving as a vertical connection that links all the spaces within the house. This not only provides easy access between floors but also facilitates the flow of light and air throughout the building.
